The Congress on Saturday distanced itself from senior general secretary Digvijaya Singh’s demand that vice-president Rahul Gandhi take over as the president of the party from mother Sonia Gandhi. The party termed his views as “personal” while many senior leaders in private ascribed motives behind Singh’s public demand.
“All such statements must be seen as positioning by those who are making it. The party is in a flux after the defeat and many leaders are trying to exploit the situation,” a senior Congress general secretary said. AICC spokesperson Anand Sharma said, “Whatever Digvijaya Singh has said is his personal view. The Congress party has always taken collective view when it comes to strengthening of the organisation or in the interest of the country.”
