Controversial BJP leader Tathagata Roy sworn in as Tripura Governor

And Lt.Gen (retd) Nirbhay Sharma to become Mizoram's 8th Governor in 10 months on May 26.

Controversial BJP leader from West Bengal Tathagata Roy was sworn in as Tripura Governor on Wednesday afternoon by Tripura High Court Chief Justice Deepak Gupta.

Roy, who was a university teacher before joining politics, has become the Governor of the North-East region’s smallest state and the CPM’s last stronghold in India amidst criticism from CPM leader Sitaram Yechury.

The new Tripura Governor has been a controversial figure (particularly for his anti-Muslim tweets) but he has said he will stop since his new office demands it.

“I used to regularly tweet but after being appointed as governor, I have completely stopped political tweets,” Roy told reporters after his arrival in Agartala on Tuesday.

A day after he was appointed Tripura Governor, Roy had also tweeted: “Thanks to all twipple who congratulated me. Please appreciate that I can’t reply individually. And, alas, no more political tweets.”

He spoke to journalists again on Wednesday after the swearing-in ceremony and expressed hopes for better Indo-Bangladesh relations, saying he hopes the planned bus-service between Kolkata and Agartala via Bangladesh to be flagged off by PM Narendra Modi during a planned visit to the neighbouring country will be a success.

Mizoram’s 8th governor in 10 months

A senior Raj Bhavan official said Wednesday Mizoram’s new Governor Lt.Gen (retd) Nirbhay Sharma will arrive on May 25 and the swearing-in ceremony has been scheduled for May 26.

Sharma, formerly Governor of Arunachal Pradesh, is Mizoram’s 8th Governor in just 10 months.

The spate of transfers and sackings of Mizoram’s Governors have led politicians and civil society members in Mizoram to protest the state being used as a “dumping ground” of UPA-appointed Governors the Narendra Modi government wants to punish or expel.

Angry students had also held street protests when President Pranab Mukherjee visited the state in April.
