Singh’s remarks came in wake of a report in Hindustan Times that said that Indian security agencies had documents to prove that the terror mastermind and his family are based in Pakistan. Asked about Dawood’s latest photograph published by the newspaper, Singh said he would not be able to say anything without verifying it. Asked about Dawood having three passports, the Home Minister said, “Such people often possess a number of passports and I have said this even in Parliament.”

During the day, television news channel Times Now aired a telephone conversation claiming that the channel’s reporter had spoken to Dawood’s wife Mehjabeen Shaikh. The conversation showed the reporter first asking the female voice on the other side of the phone call whether he could talk to Mehjabeen Shaikh. The woman replied in the affirmative. Confirming that she was speaking from Karachi, the woman sought to know who was calling. To this, the reporter asked, “I just wanted to know if you are Dawood Ibrahim’s wife.” “Yes, he is sleeping,” was the woman’s reply.
