Disclose number of illegal cell towers: CIC to MCD

The Central Information Commission has directed the Municipal Corporation of Delhi to disclose total number of illegal cellular towers operating in different areas of national capital and asked it to put all the relevant information about the towers on its web site.

The matter came before Information Commissioner Shailesh Gandhi after the civic body did not provide satisfactory reply to an RTI applicant Karam Chand who sought detailed information about the towers installed by telecom companies.

Karam Chand also asked the MCD to disclose the total number of towers for which MCD has given sanction in various zones indicating the company which has put up the tower,address of the location and fees paid for the same.

Besides,he also sought the number of illegal towers,names of the companies,copy of the guidelines for permitting installation of towers and details of action taken against MCD officers in areas where towers have come up without permission.

“The APIO Harminder Singh,EE(Building-HQ) is directed to provide the information mentioned above to the Appellant before 05 March 2010. He is also directed to ensure that the information is also displayed on the website as directed above before 05 March 2010,” Gandhi said in his order.
