HC extends interim protection to Dalvi

The public prosecutor was scheduled to present the government’s stand on the relief sought by the journalist to quash all FIRs registered against her.

The Bombay High Court Wednesday extended the interim protection from arrest granted to 46-year-old Shirin Dalvi, the editor of Urdu daily Awadhnama, by a week. The daily had to be shut down after it published the cover of French magazine Charlie Hebdo that featured a cartoon of Prophet Muhammad, considered blasphemous in Islam.

The Division Bench of Justice Ranjit More and Justice Anuja Prabhudesai said the protection granted earlier to Dalvi would continue till February 17 after the public prosecutor in the case did not turn up.

The public prosecutor was scheduled to present the government’s stand on the relief sought by the journalist to quash all FIRs registered against her.

In an interim order on February 9, the court had restrained the government and police from taking any coercive action, including arrest. Altogether, five cases have been filed against Dalvi under section 295 A of the IPC for outraging religious feelings with deliberate and malicious intent.
