HC gives state 8 weeks to implement scheme to compensate rape victims

Bombay High Court (HC) directed the state government Thursday to implement a scheme for compensation to victims of sexual and acid attacks in eight weeks

Bombay High Court (HC) directed the state government Thursday to implement a scheme for compensation to victims of sexual and acid attacks in eight weeks .

“The state should show a sense of urgency. When a scheme is in place,let it be implemented. As citizens,we should show some concern towards such victims. That is utmost priority,” the court said.

Justices S C Dharmadhikari and S B Shukre said Government of India issued guidelines for compensation to victims of rape on December 9,2010.

“These are not matters that can be postponed. Incidents are increasing. Formalities cannot take their own sweet time,” justice Dharmadhikari said.

According to National Crime Records Bureau,1,701 rapes were registered in Maharashtra in 2011. According to Mumbai Police,655 cases of rape were registered in the city between 2011 and June 2013. Victims in 409 of these cases were minor.
