HC questions zonal transplant centres

A division bench of justices Abhay Oka and Mridula Bhatkar asked the committee in Pune to accept and consider the applications according to law and the government to state its stand on the legal basis for ZTCC by Friday.

Bombay High Court (HC) asked the state government Tuesday to explain the legal basis for formation of zonal transplant coordination centres (ZTCCs).

HC was hearing a batch of petitions filed by three Pune residents who have applied to the authorization committee for organ transplant permission.

The Pune residents moved HC after their applications for kidney transplant were not accepted by the committee for months.

One of the applicants is a 17-year-old originally from Navi Mumbai who wants to undergo transplant at a Pune hospital.

He claims to be suffering from end-stage chronic renal failure since birth and needs home dialysis four times a day.

Jaslok Hospital,Mumbai,certified on June 20,2012,that he needs renal (kidney) transplant.

His mother’s driver offered to donate a kidney and a joint application was filed on January 11. The application has not been accepted by the authorization committee.

ZTCC,formed by the state government in 2001,is a non-profit NGO that promotes organ donation. It acts as a link between organ recipients and donors.

There are four ZTCCs in Mumbai,Pune,Nagpur and Aurangabad.
