J-K undertakes beautification and conservation of Dal lake

Close on the heels of PM expressing concern about the deteriorating condition of the famous Dal Lake,the J-K government began beautification and conservation drives for the water body.

Close on the heels of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh expressing concern about the deteriorating condition of the famous Dal Lake,the J and K government on Saturday began beautification and conservation drives for the water body.

Jammu and Kashmir Deputy Chief Minister Tara Chand on Saturday paid a visit to the lake and ordered strict enforcement of ban on use of polythene in and around the waterbody and installing of dustbins at each viewing deck.

He warned that licenses of ‘shikara-walla’ found using polythene would be cancelled.

Expressing concern over slow pace of work on beautification of fore-shore line he ordered an inquiry and transferred concerned executive engineer and asked him to report in the office of the Chief Engineer.

The Prime Minister during his recent visit to the Valley while describing Dal Lake conservation a national priority,had sanctioned an additional grant of Rs 356 crore for rehabilitation of Dal dwellers.

He also ordered renovation and beautification of pathways along the water body and viewing decks on modern lines.

The deputy CM also visited upcoming recreation park near Makki point,Dal Lake at a cost of Rs 15 lakh.

He also sought the help of Dal Dwellers and shopkeepers in conserving the Lake.
