Schools in the city may have been dithering,but the Khadki Cantonment Board (KCB) seems to have taken the lead in implementing the RTE Act. The board has not only constituted the school education committees but has also empowered the school heads to spend Rs 50,000 on infrastructure and office supplies.

Granting the financial independence to the school is envisaged in the RTE Act. We have fully implemented it, said S V R Chandreshekhar,KCB CEO.

The committees have been empowered to take decisions on improvement of education system. Besides officials as members,the committees have parents as representatives. Since a majority of students are from slums,the quota requirement for the economically weaker sections has been met, he added.

KCB members,however,said the board should also take other measures to improve education. The board must ensure that every student gets free uniform and doesnt drop out due to financial issues, said S L Kamble,a cantonment board member.

Chandrashekhar said the performance of the cantonment schools was better. There is not a single case of drop-out and the overall pass percentage of the schools is between 70 and 80.
