The second phase of Assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir will determine the fate of newly-launched Awami Ithead Party (AIP), which is led by Independent legislator Sheikh Abdul Rashid who had won 2008 elections from Langate constituency. Langate, 17 other constituencies will go to polls on Tuesday.
During these six years, Rashid, a former JKPCC engineer, spent most of his time in the constituency and highlighted human rights issues. Rashid left Sajjad Lone’s People’s Conference in 2008 to contest as an Independent. Instead of highlighting small constituency-matters, Rashid always focused on key issues like Indo-Pak talks, peace with separatists, civilian killings and corruption.
AIP is now contesting elections on 12 Valley seats, however, winning Langate will give it a big boast. In case Rashid loses the seat, the party will have bleak chances of survival.
“In the last 2008, I won by 210 votes, then in Parliament elections I polled 6,000 votes more than my rivals in the Langate constituency and this time I will secure more votes as the poll percentage will increase,” Rashid said.
