The BJP has taken its electoral battle to the Wagah border in Attari. The party’s poll managers have put up a poster close to the border, showing Modi issuing a symbolic warning apparently to those who spread cross-border terrorism.

“Dehshat ko denge jad se ujaad, ab ki baar Modi sarkaar’ (will uproot terrorism… this time it’s Modi government),” it says. Modi’s finger is raised as if in warning.

BJP leaders agree the poster is strategically placed. Amritsar constituency extends up to the Wagah border and BJP strategists decided the hoarding would address what is a key issue in Attari.

With narco-terrorism dominating the Lok Sabha election in Amritsar, Modi’s hoarding appears to warn Pakistan. “Terrorism is more important an issue here than in any other part of the country as residents on the border are directly affected. Even during peace, farming is done under army vigil,” said a senior leader.

A senior police official posted at the last point for state police on Wagah border said any activity that disrupts peace at the border is a cause of concern for villagers. “Farmers on the border lead a difficult life . To add to it there is smuggling of drugs from Pakistan, which is a major issue these elections.”
