Campaigning in Yamunanagar on Wednesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi accused the governments in Haryana over the last 25 years of turning the state into “Scam Haryana”, and exhorted people to vote for the BJP to make it “Skill Haryana”.
Roads leading to the venue — a stadium in Yamunanagar — were choked with people. Some waited close to two hours for Modi to arrive.
As the crowd cheered, Modi said that governments in the past had looted the state and indulged in scams. “Their character was to make Scam Haryana. Our character is to make Skill Haryana. When there is no industry, power supply is erratic due to load shedding, where will the youth go? We have started a Make in India campaign and have been promised investment from Japan and China. Industrialists in the US have also promised to invest in India,” Modi said.
“There has been no democracy in Haryana. Politics here revolves around five families. Behind closed doors, they are connected to one another. One family loots and then in the next election gives a chance to the other to loot. You feel the government has changed but actually nothing changes,” he said.
Taking a dig at INLD chief O P Chautala, Modi said that even a murderer will say he is innocent and appeal to a higher court. “He is not saying that. He is saying that I will stay in jail, take oath and become the CM there. He knows he has no way of coming out,” said Modi.
Modi said he sees a different mood this time and that the people want to change the fate of Haryana. He said there will be no hung assembly as is being predicted and that the BJP will get a majority.
In Chautala bastion, Sidhu tears into ‘backstabbing’ Badals
DABWALI: Cricketer turned BJP politician Navjot Singh Sidhu on Wednesday tore into the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD), his party’s ally in Punjab, asking voters to beware of “backstabbers”. The two-time BJP MP from Amritsar, who did not contest this summer’s Lok Sabha elections after being denied the party ticket, spoke at a campaign meeting in Dabwali for BJP candidate Dev Kumar Sharma. The seat, a bastion of the Chautalas, sent Ajay Chautala to the Haryana assembly in 2009.
Both Ajay Chautala and his father, INLD chief Om Prakash Chautala, are in prison after being convicted in the teachers’ recruitment scam, and the Dabwali seat is being defended by Ajay’s wife Naina. SAD politicians, including Punjab CM Parkash Singh Badal, have been campaigning for the INLD. “Our allies hug us in Punjab, but here in Haryana, they are wrestling with us.
This is extremely unethical and mischievous,” Sidhu said. “They support a person who claims that he will become CM from jail [Chautala]. How can our allies [in Punjab] support convicts who have been jailed for corruption?” Referring to the Badals, Sidhu said, “They forgot us [BJP], because of whom they are enjoying power in Punjab,” to loud cheers from the crowd.
