Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal on Wednesday said no land will be acquired in the state without the explicit consent of the land owners. Talking on the sidelines of vice-president Hamid Ansari’s visit to the Centre for Research in Rural and Industrial Development (CRRID) in Chandigarh,Badal said Punjab’s policy of land acquistion was much better than the one approved by the Centre on Tuesday.

“In Punjab, there is no extra or unwanted land available. Most of the land is good quality agricultural land. And if we need to acquire it we will do it only with the consent of the farmer and through land pooling. The manner in which land was acquired earlier will not be followed as it leads to distress among farmers and land owner,” he said.

Queried on the problems of drug addiction in the state,Badal said it was sad that the issue was being politicised. “Discussion levels on the issue politically had fallen and the statements being issued on such a serious issue are frivolous and in bad taste,” he added.

The chief minister further said that unless the the open sale of bhukki is stemmed in Rajasthan, drug addiction in Punjab cannot abate. “Bhukki is sold like wheat and rice in standard shops there. If something is available like this,it is bound to lead the youth astray. The Centre will have to control the movement of drugs into Punjab,” Badal said.

On the failure of the Punjab Police in nabbing the main accused in the Faridkot minor kidnapping case, the chief minister said he had asked the Punjab DGP to personally monitor the case. “Either he will visit the family or send a senior officer there. Some arrests have already been made,” he added.
