In a boost to the proposed cricket stadium here,Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Thursday directed the Revenue Department to prepare necessary papers for approval of the state cabinet.
Omar along with Union Minister Farooq Abdullah,who is also President of the J&K cricket Association (JKCA),inspected the site for proposed stadium,cricket academy and hostel at Bajalta,10 kms from here.
Over 81 acres of land has been identified for the construction of the stadium and allied facilities. JKCA will develop and construct the sports complex at the site.
Omar said his government has flagged development and growth of sports as one of the important sectors. Various measures have already been taken to provide required sports infrastructure across the state.
“Over a dozen sports stadia are being constructed at various districts headquarters,” he said adding that construction of indoor sports complexes in Jammu and Srinagar was also in the pipeline.
The Chief Minister said that in order to nurture cricket talent in the state,the government would facilitate the JKCA in its endeavour to further develop the sports.
Farooq Abdullah said that the Association is also contemplating constructing a similar cricket facility in Srinagar so that national and international level matches could be held there in near future.
The JKCA president said that he would invite BCCI president to lay the foundation of the cricket stadium at Jammu as soon as “we receive the green signal from the state government”.
