Over 2,200 committed suicide on railway tracks in Delhi

Over 2,200 people committed suicides on railway tracks across the national capital in the last 5 yrs.

Over 2,200 people committed suicides on railway tracks across the national capital in the last five years,the highest among the metro cities.

According to official data,out of a total of 2,713 suicide deaths in four metros — Delhi,Chennai,Kolkata and Madras — a highest of 2,247 were reported in the national capital.

According to an RTI reply by Railway Ministry,all deaths have occurred between 2004-2008.

Kolkata reported a total of 296 suicides on tracks followed by 139 in Mumbai and 31 in Chennai.

Exercising his Right to Information,Chetan Kothari had sought details of railways earning from all its 16 zones spread across the country and number of suicides on railway tracks in four metros.

“It is surprising that such large number of suicides were committed on just one railway track – the northern railways,” Kothari said.

The cases of suicides on railway tracks in Delhi have seen a rise from 375 in 2004 to 541 such deaths in 2008.
