School bus was trying to overtake another: Truck driver to police

The driver of the truck,that collided head-on with a school bus killing 13 children on Monday,has claimed that the school bus was attempting to overtake another bus and hence rammed into his vehicle.

The driver of the truck,that collided head-on with a school bus killing 13 children on Monday,has claimed that the school bus was attempting to overtake another bus and hence rammed into his vehicle. He was sent to one-day police remand on Wednesday.

Police sources revealed that truck driver Jagjit Singh,who was picked up from Gharial village in Moga district on Tuesday,claimed that he was travelling at a decent speed and was on his side of the road when the mishap occurred.

During his interrogation,sources said,Jagjit has said that he had no time to react as the school bus driver had overtaken a car and was attempting to do the same to a bus despite there be no space for the manoeuvre. He added that he fled the scene as he was scared and later boarded a bus to his village.

Meanwhile,in a joint operation,Jalandhar City Traffic Police and DTO — over the past two days — have impounded 14 school vehicles and challaned 94 school buses for flouting norms.
