SEZ legislation arbitrary Act: Social Watch

An NGO says the SEZ legislation is ‘an arbitrary act’ which threatens livelihoods and food security,environment as well as fiscal health of the country.

The Special Economic Zone legislation is ‘an arbitrary act’ which threatens livelihoods and food security,environment as well as fiscal health of the country,an NGO ‘West Bengal State Social Watch’ said today.

The NGO,a part of National Social Watch,in a report on ‘Development of SEZ and people’s movement’,observed that the expansion of SEZ in the state was marked with violation of rights of common people and undermined democratic norms and principles.

At the same time,it said,the SEZ debate has witnessed unprecedented civil society uprising in the last few years.

“Singur and Nandigram became known names worldwide because of the SEZ related anti-eviction movements,” the report said.
