Sheila-son at loggerheads on disbanding DERC

Delhi CM Sheila Dikshit and her MP son Sandeep found themselves on opposite sides of the table over the issue of disbanding the DERC.

Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit and her MP son Sandeep found themselves on opposite sides of the table on Saturday over the issue of disbanding the Delhi Electricity Regulatory Commission (DERC),which the latter termed as a “defunct” body.

Sandeep, who represents East Delhi Lok Sabha constituency, asked the Delhi Chief Minister to disband the DERC,which he said is being run by a set of people “who are completely inactive.”

“This commission is doing nothing and has proved it self worthless. As an MP and a citizen of Delhi I demand that you pull out the power of attorney from it,” he said.

The MP was speaking at the foundation laying ceremony of BSES’ 66/11 kv power grid at the Commonwealth Games village site, where the Chief Minister was the chief guest.

The BSES is setting up the new grid to meet the electricity requirements during the sporting extravaganza which is scheduled to be held in Delhi next year.

Sandeep said,”I am making very serious allegations against DERC and demand that you (the Chief Minister) at least change the current set of people there as they are completely inactive.”

However, his mother did not seem to have a similar opinion of the regulatory body, which has faced flak from consumers now and then.

When asked about the demand made by Sandeep, the Chief Minister simply said,”It seems he is not satisfied with it. We keep getting complaints and we look into them,” she said.

The DERC was constituted by the Government of Delhi in 1999 and is mandated to regularize the electricity tariff, power generation and distribution.
