WITH an aim to save school hours of students, the Rajkot division of Gujarat State Transport Corporation (GSRTC) has decided to deliver concessional travelling passes to students at doorsteps of their respective schools and colleges in Rajkot, Morbi and Surendranagar districts this year. After Bhuj, Rajkot will become second division of GSRTC to roll out such service in the state.
GSRTC officials have already held meetings with district collectors and district education officers (DEOs) in these three districts and necessary circulars to 1,554 schools and colleges in this respect have been issued. As part of the arrangement, clerks of GSRTC will start visiting these educational institutes in a phased manner from June 5.
The corporation has asked institutes to collect filled up application forms, bonafied student certificates and fees from students. If an institute has internet connectivity, passes will be issued on the spot. If there is no internet connectivity, GSTRC staff will collect forms, certificates and fees from the institute, prepare passes in the respective depot and deliver them to respective institute in next day or two.
“The move is basically aimed at saving time of students. They will not require to stand in long queues at depots. We will not have to bother managing such queues where boys and girls jostle many times,” divisional control of GSRTC in Rajkot, Dinesh Jethva said.
However, Jethva said that students will have option to directly approach GSRTC depot for availing of concessional passes as they have been doing in past years.
“All girl students will be issued travelling passes free of cost while boy students will get 82.5 per cent concession in bus fares. We shall issue passes to girl students for six months and to boys for three months. Our staff will continue visiting educational institutes periodically to renew these passes,” the divisional controller added.
GSRTC officers say more than 30,000 students in these three districts will get the benefit of this new initiative.
