A self-immolation bid by a Tibetan youth was foiled by the police in Dharamsala, the seat of Tibetan government-in-exile,during a peaceful march on Sunday to mark the 54th anniversary of the failed 1959 uprising against the Chinese rule.

The youth,Dawa Dhondup (30) allegedly drank petrol, poured some over himself and tried to set himself ablaze, before being overpowered by the police and fellow Tibetans, the police said.

“He could not set himself ablaze but his condition was serious as he had consumed petrol and was rushed to o Government Medical College Hospital at Tanda. His condition is stable,” Kangra SP,Balbir Thakur said.

The SP said that such incident (self-immolation for Tibet) never happened in Dharamsala. “Keeping in view this incident,it will now be difficult for the police to allow them to hold processions and demonstrations,” he said, adding that the police have registered a case of attempt to suicide against Dawa.

The youth, sources said, escaped from Tibet in 2007 and had been living at McLeodganj since then and earning his livelihood as a vendor. He is an active member of the Tibetan Youth Congress (TYC) and all his family members are still in Tibet.

Every year,Tibetan exiles in India mark the anniversary of the failed March 10,1959,uprising with speeches and marches.

As many as 107 self-immolations have been reported in Tibetan areas since 2009 and 90 of them have died, with the protesters calling for the return of the Tibetans’ spiritual leader the Dalai Lama.

Meanwhile Tibetan Prime Minister Lobsang Sangay Sunday stressed the need for finding an amicable solution to the Tibetan issue. He said the Tibetan government-in-exile was fully committed to the middle way approach, which seeks genuine autonomy for Tibetans.

He also asked the Chinese leadership to adopt a pragmatic political approach keeping both the Tibetan and Chinese interests in mind.

Sangay called on the international community to press the Chinese government to allow the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights entry into Tibet, and also to give access to diplomats and the international media.
