Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif became the Prime Minister early this month, after Pakistan held its elections, which was marred by controversy and accusations of rigging.
The PML-N (79 seats) and PPP (54) agreed to form a coalition government while candidates backed by jailed former Prime Minister Imran Khan gained the most (93) seats in the National Assembly with a total of 266 elected seats.
Khan has alleged that the new government, led by Nawaz Sharif’s brother Shehbaz Sharif as the PM is a breach of the people’s mandate.
What are the implications of the Shehbaz Sharif-led government in Pakistan? What is the future of Imran Khan? Has Pakistan Army Chief Asim Munir established his writ on the civilian government? Have the people of Pakistan delivered a strong message by voting in favour PTI-backed candidates? Is there a possibility of re-engagement with Pakistan?
To answer and explain some of these questions, T C A Raghavan, who was India’s High Commissioner to Pakistan, will be the guest on Wednesday at 6 pm on March 20 at a session of Explained.Live titled, “Pakistan in turmoil: what happens next?”
Raghavan’s expertise on Pakistan was honed over two postings – before his stint as High Commissioner from July 2013 to December 2015, he served as Deputy High Commissioner from 2003 to 2007– and in between, as head of the Pakistan-Afghanistan-Iran desk at the Ministry of External Affairs in New Delhi. He is also author of the book, The People Next Door — The Curious History of India’s relations with Pakistan (Harper Collins, 2017).
