Jaishankar tells Chinese counterpart to ‘ensure full respect for LAC’ during ASEAN meet

The two foreign ministers met at the sidelines of the ASEAN Summit in Vientiane. Jaishankar met Yi for the second time in the month of July and discussed resolving the issues at LAC.

In a meeting with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar emphasised on the need to respect the past agreements and ensure “full respect” for the Line of Actual Control (LAC).

The two foreign ministers met at the sidelines of the ASEAN Summit in Vientiane. Jaishankar met Yi for the second time in the month of July and discussed resolving the issues at LAC.

It gave an opportunity to both the leaders to review the work done since they last met on the margins of Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Summit in Astana on July 4.

Jaishankar detailed the meeting with Wang Yi in a post on X and said that discussions happened on the bilateral relations between the two countries.

Jaishankar said, “Met with CPC Politburo member and FM Wang Yi in Vientiane today. Continued our ongoing discussions about our bilateral relationship. The state of the border will necessarily be reflected on the state of our ties.”

Jaishankar mentioned in his X post about the disengagement process and the need to complete it, alongside respecting the agreements signed bilaterally. He also talked about respecting the LAC.

Elaborating about stabilizing ties, Jaishankar posted on X, “Agreed on the need to give strong guidance to complete the disengagement process. Must ensure full respect for the LAC and past agreements. It is in our mutual interest to stabilize our ties. We should approach the immediate issues with a sense of purpose and urgency.”

India and China have been at loggerheads since June 2020 when the Galwan Valley clash took place. While India has maintained its stance that its relations with China can’t be normal until there’s peace in the border region.

The Ministry of External Affairs in a statement about the two ministers meeting said that minister Jaishankar stressed the importance of three mutuals – mutual respect, mutual interest and mutual sensitivity to the ties between India-China.
