At least five CRPF personnel were killed in a shootout with militants in Jammu and Kashmir’s Anantnag district on Wednesday. A militant was also killed in the crossfire. Initial reports said three jawans were killed. Later, two injured jawans also succumbed to their injuries.
“Two more CRPF Personnel injured succumbed and attained martyrdom. Total 5 CRPF Personnel attained martyrdom. 3 injured personnel evacuated to 92 BH. One terrorist neutralised and body recovered along with one AK weapon. Combing operations on,” said a CRPF spokesperson.
“Motor cycle-borne terrorists fired upon troops of B/116Bn and JKP who were on L/O duty at 1655 hrs in which 03 CRPF jawan attained martyrdom, 03 others injured and evacuated to Janglad Mandi Hospital. 01 militant neutralised, and the area cordoned off, re-inforcement reached. Firing on,” read a CRPF statement.

A J&K Police SHO and a girl were also injured in the incident. Combing operations are underway and the area has been cordoned off.

The incident has taken place five days after four militants, suspected to belong to Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM), were killed in an encounter with security forces in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pulwama district.
Former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah condemned the attack and expressed grief over the loss of lives.

The attack also comes months after 40 CRPF personnel were killed in a suicide blast in Pulwama, which led to an aerial dogfight between India and Pakistan.
