Two Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) militants were killed in a joint operation by security forces and the police in North Kashmir’s Sopore on Thursday, authorities said. Another encounter was on in South Kashmir’s Tral.
Officials said the first gunfight broke out in Hardshiva village area of Baramulla district early on Thursday after the police received an input on the militants’ presence there.
“During the search operation, as the presence of terrorists got ascertained, they were given the opportunity to surrender. However, they fired indiscriminately upon the joint search party, which was retaliated, leading to an encounter,” said a police spokesperson. “The identification and affiliation of the killed terrorists is being ascertained. However, as per credible sources, the killed terrorists belonged to proscribed LeT terrorist outfit.”
This is the latest of several bloody encounters that have unfolded in the Valley this year, in which 110 militants have been killed so far.
The J&K Police said the other gunfight started at Chewa Ular area of Awantipora. “Police and security forces are on the job. Further details shall follow,” read a tweet by Kashmir Police Zone.
Terror module busted
The J&K Police said it had busted a “terror module” linked to the LeT and arresting five militant associates in Budgam district of Central Kashmir. “On a credible input, Budgam police along with 02 RR have arrested 5 terrorist associates from Narbal area,” a police statement said.
According to the police, they have recovered “28 AK-47 rounds, 1 AK-47 magazine and 20 posters of LeT”. “As per the police records, they were involved in providing logistic support and shelter to the active terrorists of LeT operating in the area,” the police said.
