Comedian Kunal KamraThe controversy over Kunal Kamra’s statement against Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde reached Parliament Tuesday, with Shiv Sena MP Dhairyasheel Sambhajirao Mane demanding “some rules” for content and a ban on platforms “which promote hate speech”.
The Shiv Sena MP’s remarks come amid a massive row over the comments made by Kunal Kamra against Eknath Shinde during a stand-up show.
Speaking during the discussion in Lok Sabha, Mane said, “In the name of comedy, some people are trying to open their political shops”. “I come from Maharashtra, and for the last two days, you must have seen that a joker has been speaking against the deputy chief minister. Through this House, I would like to say that there should be some rules. Instead of making comments on a person, if you speak on policies, it would be welcome.”
“In the name of comedy, many are trying to open their political shops. Someone from here writes a script and the comedian goes and says it on stage. I would like to demand that there should be a shutdown on such platforms which promote hate speech and can create a tense situation between two persons,” the Shiv Sena leader added.
Meanwhile, the Mumbai police, which booked Kunal Kamra Monday for defamation, summoned the comedian for questioning. After Kunal Kamra posted a video of his stand-up show in which he takes a jibe at Shinde among others, his comments triggered a political slugfest in Maharashtra.
After the clip of the remark went viral, supporters of the Shiv Sena ransacked The Habitat studio where Kamra recorded the show, early Sunday. The police booked the Sena workers for vandalising the studio, and arrested them Monday. They were released on bail later in the evening.
