Following the assault of a government official in Patna earlier this week, the Bihar Police made one arrest and also named two relatives of RJD chief Lalu Prasad as accused in the case.

Arvind Kumar Singh (38), the executive officer of Dobhi Nagar panchayat in Gaya district, was travelling in a car along with a builder and some others on Gola Road in Patna on Tuesday night when he was attacked. He was severely beaten up, allegedly by Tanuj Yadav and Nayan Yadav – sons of Lalu’s nephew Nagendra Rai — and their friend Ranjan Kumar Singh, among others.

The victim, who suffered fractures and head injuries, was first taken to a private hospital in Patna and later moved to AIIMS in New Delhi.

On Wednesday, an FIR was filed at Rupaspur police station, after which Ranjan Kumar was arrested from Nagendra Rai’s house at Ram Jaipal Nagar in Patna.

Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Tejashwi Prasad Yadav said on Thursday the guilty would not be spared “irrespective of who they are”.

“Aaplog abhi tak Tejashwi Yadav ko nahi jaante. Jo doshi hai unko baksha nahi jayega (You do not yet know Tejashwi Yadav. The guilty will not be spared),” he said.

Patna City (West) Superintendent of Police Rajesh Kumar said: “When we arrested Ranjan, we found him injured too. He told us that there was a scuffle between two groups – one led by Patna builder Manish Singh and another by Tanuj Yadav and others. The victim, Arvind, seems to have no direct links with the scuffle and he might well have been beaten up as he was accompanying Manish.”

A separate case was lodged by Ranjan Kumar Singh against builder Manish Singh and five others.

Police said they were trying to find the motive behind the scuffle. “Prima facie, it looked like a case of road rage, but there could be more to it. We have been conducting raids to trace the other accused,” the officer said.
