26 children die in two govt hospitals in 3 days

The Chief medical officer said they had been brought to the hospitals in a critical condition.

Twenty six children have died in two governments hospitals in Murshidabad district since Friday,a senior Health department officer said on Sunday.

Chief Medical Officer Health (CMOH) Shahjahan Siraj said 16 children have died in Baharampore District Hospital and 10 in Jangipur Sub-Divisional Hospital. The CMOH said most of the children,who died in the two hospitals were suffering from respiratory problems,malnutrition,septicaemia and other serious diseases and were referred to these two hospitals from the primary health centres in critical condition.

Siraj said a team of doctors was expected to arrive from Kolkata soon.

Earlier,18 babies had died at the state-run BC Roy Memorial Hospital,considered to be the largest referral paediatric hospital in the eastern region in from June 29-30,after which the West Bengal government had ordered an inquiry into the matter.
