Does onus of Internet content lie with service providers?

An MP described the govt's move as a gradual policy of censorship and control on the Internet.

Concern was expressed in the Rajya Sabha over the government’s move to put the onus of Internet content on service providers.

Raising the issue during Zero Hour,Rajeev Chandrasekhar (Ind) described the government’s move as “gradual policy of censorship and control on the Internet.”

He said this would amount to “backdoor entry of censorship.”

Noting that blogging is very important and it represented young thought,he urged the government to prevent any form of censorship on blogging,blogger and Internet content.

Chandrasekhar mentioned this amid din when the ruling party members and those from BJP were engaged in a heated exchange over the issue of WikiLeaks expose and publication of a report in a news magazine about alleged irregularities in telecom during NDA’s rule.
