EC cautions against personal attacks during campaign

The Election Commission issued a stern warning to political leaders against personal attacks during election campaigns.

The Election Commission issued a stern warning to political leaders against personal attacks during election campaigns,a day after Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi targeted Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in an election speech by saying “nobody remembered him when he was on holiday for two months”.

“I did not see it (the statement) myself. When I go to Delhi I will see. But this much I can say that personal attack (during election meetings) is a violation of model code of conduct,” Election Commissioner S Y Quereshi said in Ranchi.

He was replying to a query on Modi’s statement during a rally at Ahmedabad on Friday when he apparently referred to Singh’s absence from work while recuperating from a bypass heart surgery.

“Any inflammatory speech also comes under the violation of model code,” he said, adding speeches on the lines of caste and tribe would also attract charges under three sections of Indian Penal code and one under the election model code of conduct.
