Anuradha Bali alias Fiza Mohammad, the 39-year-old estranged second wife of former Haryana deputy chief minister Chander Mohan, lived a controversial life, and her death was no different. The police broke into her house in Mohali on Monday morning and found her highly decomposed body in the bedroom, after neighbours reported foul smell emanating from there.
Bali, the former assistant advocate general of Haryana, had made the headlines in November 2008 when she disappeared with Mohan, who was already married to Seema Bishnoi. They resurfaced a fortnight later after having embraced Islam.
Bali changed her name to Fiza and Chander Mohan to Chand Mohammed. They got married at a Chandigarh mosque on December 2,2008 with a maulvi solemnising the nikaah and the groom paying Rs 5 lakh as meher to her.
Fiza and Mohan, then Haryanas second-most important man, declared on television: Humne jeene marne ki kasam khai hai (We have taken a vow to live and die together).
Barely 20 days later,Mohan dumped her as his political career nosedived after the marriage. His father, former chief minister Bhajan Lal,disowned him while Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda sacked him. My head hangs in shame. This act (of marriage) is shameful for me,my family and state, Lal had said.
After her newly wed husband suddenly left her house in Mohali,Fiza alleged that Mohan was kidnapped and she pointed a finger at Kuldeep Bishnoi, her husbands younger brother.
Mohan,in the meantime, was spotted near Raj Ghat in New Delhi by the police who took him to the Daryaganj police station. Later,he left the police station saying that he would go back on his own.
Chand Mohammad, however, went missing again only to resurface outside the Sector 14 residence of his brother Kuldeep Bishnoi and told TV channels that he was missing his first wife Seema and their children and that he could not stay away from them.
As relations soured between the two,Fiza filed a complaint of rape, cheating, intimidation and hurting religious sentiments against Mohan. However,he was given a clean chit by the Punjab Police.
On March 14,2009,Chand called her up from London and uttered talaq three times. He also sent her an SMS with the message, she had said.
The depressed woman even sought to find a place in the political arena in order to take revenge.
Fiza allegedly attempted suicide last year by consuming sedatives, but friends saved her. This time around,no friend was there. No suicide note was found and all she left behind is a bottle of liquor and two glasses that could hold some clue to her death.
She may have died four to five days ago, said Deputy Superintendent of Police D S Mann.
Bali was earlier married to a Mohali businessman, but got divorced after a year of marriage.
