Govt contradicts Rahul, says no rape happened in Bhatta-Parsaul

Rahul Gandhi had claimed that women were raped after UP govt ordered a crackdown on agitators in May.

There was no confirmation of any rape in the Greater Noida villages in Uttar Pradesh during clashes between farmers and police in May,the government informed the Rajya Sabha.

“An inquiry committee constituted by the National Commission for Women visited the Bhatta-Parsaul villages in UP on 12-05-2011. No specific case of rape has been confirmed by the Inquiry Committee,” Women and Child Welfare Minister Krishna Tirath said in reply to a written question.

Earlier, some Congress leaders, including Rahul Gandhi and Digvijay Singh, had claimed that women were raped after the Mayawati government in Uttar Pradesh ordered a crackdown on agitators and forced them to flee from the two villages.

More than a month after the allegations, the National Commission for Women (NCW) had ruled out rape of women by policemen in Bhatta-Parsaul. The findings are similar to those of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC),whose preliminary report too had ruled out rape.

The government had, however, cast doubts on the veracity of the NHRC report.

“Other agencies have confirmed that women were treated in a way which we are all against. Let us see. Views and counter views are coming. Let me see from where these reports have come,” said Ambika Soni had said.
