The Allahabad high court reserved its verdict on a petition challenging the election of Congress president Sonia Gandhi from Rae Bareli.
The Lucknow Bench of the court comprising Justice Satish Chandra passed this order on an election petition filed by a voter and elector Rakesh Singh of Rae Bareli.
The petitioner raised the matter of Sonia Gandhi’s citizenship as well as her name,as mentioned in the voters list.
Ashok Pandey,the counsel of the petitioner told PTI that only a citizen of India is eligible to be chosen as the MP and questioned as to how a person who is not qualified to be chosen as an MP has been elected from the petitioner’s constituency.
The petitioner’s counsel stressed that citizenship by birth cannot be set at par with those who have got it through registration.
Bihar court drops charges against Sonia,Rahul
A Bihar court dropped the names of Congress President Sonia Gandhi and General Secretary Rahul Gandhi from a complaint petition following withdrawal of charges made against them by the petitioner in connection with a case of cheating.
Chief Judicial Magistrate Ramesh Chandra Malviya,however,summoned AICC in-charge of Bihar and Union Minister Mukul Wasnik and the party’s Muzaffarpur district head Vinita Vijay to appear in person on March 9.
In his complaint S K Ojha had earlier alleged that Sonia Gandhi and six others had cheated him by making false promises of giving him a party ticket for the last state Assembly elections.
In his initial complaint,Ojha said that Bihar PCC chief Choudhary Mehboob Ali Kaiser had advised him to meet Wasnik,who he alleged,had demanded money for allotting party ticket to him.
