Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) will seek further custody of two terror suspects,held for allegedly planning strikes in the city at the instance of a Pakistan-based outfit.
Abdul Latif alias Guddu (29) and Riyaz Ali alias Rehan (23) were nabbed on Saturday by the ATS for plotting to attack ONGC headquarters,two markets and cause sabotage. They were remanded in police custody till March 18.
“We would seek further custody of the two accused on Thursday as a lot needs to be extracted from them through interrogation,” said an ATS official.
The duo had allegedly conducted a recce of three targets — headquarters of the public sector petroleum company ONGC,Thakkar Mall in suburban Mumbai and Mangaldas Market in South Mumbai.
According to the ATS,the two were directed by a Pakistan- based person,referred as “uncle” in telephonic talks,to execute terror plans at the select targets. Police suspect the “uncle” could be Bashir Khan,an absconding accused in the 1993 serial bomb blasts.
Bashir is an aide of Tiger Memon,who is closely associated with underworld don and global terrorist Dawood Ibrahim,said to be residing in Pakistan.
Police officials said the phone calls the duo received from “uncle” had been traced to Karachi.
