A ‘depressed’ youth set himself on fire in front of Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee’s residence and then jumped into an adjacent canal allegedly after he failed to get a job in the Railways.
Prasun Dutta,a resident of Bansberia in Hooghly district,an unemployed, visited Banerjee’s Harish Chatterjee street residence in the morning along with a group of youths seeking a job in the Railways.
After sometime,Dutta suddenly set himself on fire taking his companions by surprise and then jumped into the adjacent Adi Ganga canal, police said.
He was rescued by his companions aided by local people and rushed to the M R Bangur Hospital. The youth was later shifted to the Belle Vue Nursing Home.
The CEO of the nursing home,P Tandon said Dutta was admitted with 83 per cent burns.
The youth’s family said he worked as a cable TV subscription collector and had been promised a railway job by local Trinamool leaders. After they failed to make good on their promise,Dutta went to Banerjee’s house to plead for a job.
Trinamool Congress refused to attach any importance to the incident, saying the man was “depressed” and there was no politics attached to it.
“A depressed youth has tried to use his body. This is not for any political reason. This has no importance. Someone can do this in front of your house too,” Leader of the Opposition Partha Chatterjee told reporters.
