No plea from Afzal Guru for transfer to a jail in J-K: Omar

The SC had on sought the Centre's response on a plea of Guru for transfer him to a prison in J-K from Tihar Jail.

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Wednesday said his government has received no plea from Parliament attack case convict Afzal Guru for shifting him to a jail in the state.

“I have not received any application from Guru’s side so far. As and when I will receive it,we will take a view on that,” Omar told reporters after meeting Union Home Minister P Chidambaram here.

The Supreme Court had on February 11 sought the Centre’s response on a plea of 41-year-old Guru,who has been sentenced to death in the Parliament attack case,for transfer

to a prison in Jammu and Kashmir from Tihar Jail.

He sought his transfer on the ground that his family members live there and that it was difficult for them to come over to the national capital to meet him.

In his petition,filed through advocate Kamakshi Singh Mahilwal,Guru pleaded that he has a 11-year-old son,while his mother is above 80 years and it is difficult for them to visit Delhi.

He said it is also not possible for his family to bear the cost of their travel from Jammu and Kashmir to Delhi and added that the government should either transfer him to a Jammu and Kashmir jail or bear the cost of his family’s travel.

Omar said during his meeting with Chidambaram he discussed the prevailing law and order situation in Jammu and Kashmir,the issue of withdrawing the Disturbed Areas Act from some part of the Valley and removal of more bunkers from civilians areas.

On reduction of paramilitary forces,Omar said,”It has been our constant endeavour to reduce the footprints of security forces and it will be done after assessing the ground situation in the state.”
