Union Environment minister Jairam Ramesh on Tuesday called for massive afforestation to ensure successful implementation of the National Mission for Green India.
“The mission is one of the many action plans framed to confront climate change,” he said,inaugurating the Regional Consultative Mission for Green India here.
Ramesh said the Green India Mission could not be implemented at one go. In this connection,a pilot project would be undertaken.
Based on the findings of the project,the Rs 40,000-crore Green India Mission would be implemented,he said and pointed out that those involved in the programme should not take a “business as usual” approach.
B M Rathod,Director General (Forests),Union Ministry of Environment and Forests said the goal of the mission had to be seen in the light of climate adaptation and mitigation,meant to enhance ecosystem services.
Ramesh also called for redefining the role of the Forest department and radical changes in its functioning.
