Time ripe for peace talks with Maoists: Agnivesh

Chhattisgarh CM also said his govt would not hesitate to consider any proposal for peace talks.

Taking a step forward towards initiating a peace process after the release of abducted policemen,Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Raman Singh today said his government would not hesitate to consider any proposal for peace talks with Maoists even as social activist Swami Agnivesh appealed to the parties in the conflict to opt for a 72 hour cease fire to facilitate such a process.

“The initiative taken for a peace process last year was derailed after the killing of Maoist leader Azad. The matter is now before the Supreme Court. After this incident of abduction and safe release of the hostages by the Maoists,an atmosphere for initiating a fresh peace talks has been created again. It’s time to take this initiative forward”,social activist Swami Agnivesh said at a joint press conference with Chief Minister Raman Singh.

“We welcome such initiatives as it’s our firm belief that all such problems could only be solved through talks. If the government gets a proposal,we will not hesitate to take it forward. On specific issues,we will give due consideration on its merits. Our goal is to ensure peace and speed up the process of development for the welfare of the people”,Singh said responding to Swami Agnivesh’s suggestion for a peace initiative.

Referring to the abduction of cops and their subsequent release,Agnivesh said “the Maoists treated them well while remaining 18 days in captivity. They did not torture them and released them without any precondition”,he said and adding that this became possible as the state government agreed to suspend search and combing operation by the security forces for 48 hours, though the rebels had only sought suspension of operations only for 24 hours.

“ Dandakaranya region in Chhattisgarh is the epicenter of Maoist activities. This abduction and subsequent release is a turning point. We have to explore on whether a peace process could begin from Chhattisgarh. If it happens,it will be a new beginning”,Agnivesh said and appealed to the state government to review all those cases in which people were being detailed just on the basis of mere suspension.

“Please examine all such cases. At least the state can consider releasing all those people who have been detained just on the basis of suspicion. This will create an atmosphere conducive for peace talks”,he added.

“ I have told the Maoists to give at least a fortnight’s time if they decide to opt for a cease fire for initiating peace talks as he wouldrequire time to talk to the centre as well as chief ministers of all problem facing states. Once, the crucial period of 72 hours remains incident free, governments and the Maoists rebels could extend cease fire for a longer period for taking the talks forward”,he said adding that the modalities such as safe passage for Maoists and other issues could be worked out at a later stage.

“Our country has been holding talks with Pakistan, separatist groups and even militants. So,why can’t we talk with our own brothers and sisters ?”,he asked adding that he was ready to mediate for peace talks once the proposal comes through.

Asked about reports that the Maoists had told the abducted policemen to quit their jobs,Agvinesh said “ We were there at the camp. Maoists did not set any pre-condition. I fact,I would tell the Chief Minister to whatever possible for them as they all belonged to poor families”.

“In fact, the Maoists also told us that they are still firm on their stand that they are ready for talks”,he added.
