Mother, 2-year-old son killed in landslide in Manipur’s Tamenglong district

Incessant rainfall hit the Tamenglong district on Monday, triggering landslides in several areas, including the National Highway 37 (Imphal-Jiribam Road).

A mother and her two-year-old child died while two others received injuries after landslide debris fell on their house in the Tamenglong district of Manipur on Monday night.

The police said the landslide took place around 11.30 pm at Ward number 3 of the Dimthanlong area. The family was sleeping when landslide debris fell on their house crushing Duanjangliu, 28, and her son Jaojiangai to death.

Duanjangliu’s husband Ringsunglung, 32, and his younger brother Chungaingam also suffered injuries in the incident. They were rescued by their neighbours who were awoken by the commotion.

Ringsunglung, a police constable posted at the Tamenglong district headquarters is said to be in a critical condition. He was first rushed to the Tamenglong District Hospital but later referred to a hospital in Imphal.

The landslide has destroyed the house, said officials on Tuesday.

The NH-37 was cut off after a portion of the highway eroded near the Sinam village. A large portion of the Tongjeimaril Road (formerly Old Cachar Road), also washed away between Rengpang and Toudaijang in the Noney district.
