The officer added that although the situation had come under control, a large contingent of police and other security personnel remained deployed in the area. (Express File) Tension prevailed at Kailashahar in Tripura’s Unakoti district after a motorcycle was set ablaze allegedly over a dispute concerning contractor work orders. The incident occurred in front of the water resources department office at Cinema Hall Para in Kailashahar. No police case has been filed.
Speaking to reporters, a police officer said, “Fire was doused with the help of the Fire Brigade. We dispersed the people who had assembled there. As we intervened in time, the situation could not escalate. So far, we have not received any kind of complaint. We have started our inquiry to trace the owner of the bike.”
The officer added that although the situation had come under control, a large contingent of police and other security personnel remained deployed in the area. There are no reports of any fresh tension.
Asked whether the incident had had anything to do with some dispute over contract work, the police officer said, “We have not received any such complaint as of now, so we cannot say anything about it.”
A group of contractors alleged that despite being given assurances, they were not provided their designated work sites. “We were assured a site today, and accordingly, we brought five trippers full of sand, five trippers full of concrete and one tripper full of cement along with other materials. We also took labourers there. But we didn’t get the site as no office staff went there,” one of them said.
The contractors later visited the flood control office at Paschimbazar and then the subdivision office, where they said they could not find any staff members to communicate with.
A contractor who wished to remain anonymous said, “Kailashahar is habitually flood-prone. It may again be affected by floods. If we are prevented from doing our work, how can we work and how will the flood be controlled? We have submitted a letter to this office to give us a site. We will wait for some days. If our demand is not met, we will take legal steps.”
The Unakoti additional superintendent of police, the Kailashahar subdivisional police officer and the officer in charge of the local police station, among other officials, rushed to the spot.
