Rape survivor shot at in Rajasthan, 3 arrested

Former chief minister Ashok Gehlot inquired about the health of the victim in the hospital on Monday and talked to her family members.

The Rajasthan police have arrested three persons for firing at a 25-year-old rape survivor and attacking her with machetes. The woman’s brother was also injured in the attack and the two are undergoing treatment at a hospital in Jaipur.

Rajendra Yadav (33), who attacked woman, was arrested by the police from Malviya Nagar area of Jaipur on Monday while his aides — Mahipal Gujral and Rahul Gujral — were arrested on Sunday.

On February 24 evening, Yadav and his aides had fatally attacked the girl and her brother barely 20 metres away from Pragpura police station in Kotputli-Behror. After the attack they all fled and Yadav got hit by a train in which one of his legs got severed. The accused is currently undergoing treatment at SMS Trauma Centre, Jaipur.

Rajasthan DGP U R Sahoo while talking to The Indian Express said, “Police were conducting raids to arrest the accused when we got the information that he had suffered injuries and was being taken to hospital. We have placed him under arrest. Whether he jumped in front of the train or was it an accident, is not yet clear. Once he is released from the hospital, all the facts will become clear.”

According to reports, the woman had filed a rape case against Yadav because of which he was jailed. When Yadav got bail, he started mounting pressure on her to withdraw the case. The woman had even sought protection from the police, but to no avail. Yadav, along with his associates, attacked the woman and her brother on February 24 evening with machetes and fired a bullet that pierced her spine. She is admitted to a hospital and her condition is stated to be critical.

The incident has even taken a political turn.

Former Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot reached the hospital in Jaipur on Monday to meet the woman’s family and said, “If the woman had got security on time the incident could have been avoided. This is negligence on part of the government and strict action should be taken against the accused.”

BJP MLA Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore assured that strict action will be taken against the accused and his case would be made an example. He said that government’s priority is to first save the rape survivor and then punish the accused.
