Torn between fatherly emotions and party loyalties, veteran Congress leader Arjun Singh made a brief appearance in Sidhi constituency in Madhya Pradesh where his daughter is contesting as an Independent and made an appeal to people to vote for the party candidate.
The Union HRD Minister fondly known as Dao Sahab came to Sidhi town just hours before the close of the campaign and spoke for less than three minutes.
The 79-year-old leader did not take the name of his daughter Veena Singh nor did he mention the name of Congress candidate Indrajeet Patel but said Sidhi should have a MP from the Congress party. Sidhi goes to the polls on April 23.
Singh who went to Sidhi in a car from Satna where he arrived by train from New Delhi said people of the constituency were lucky that they have got an opportunity to serve Sonia Gandhi.
The Minister’s son,Ajay Singh who is an MLA in MP in his brief remarks said Arjun Singh’s 50 years of service to the Congress should not be allowed to go in vain.
Without mentioning his sister,Veena Singh by name,Ajay said that the election in Sidhi posed a big dilemma for all supporters of Arjun Singh in Sidhi district.
Congress had won the by-poll from the Sidhi constituency in 2007. Veena Singh was in the race for a Congress ticket from both the Satna and Sidhi constituencies and when she was denied the party ticket, she sprang a surprise by filing her nominations as an independent nominee from Sidhi.
Arjun Singh had announced in New Delhi that he would campaign for the Congress against his daughter in Sidhi soon after his daughter filed her papers.
