BJP MLA elected as Punjab Deputy Speaker

The one-day special session was convened to elect the Deputy Speaker.

Amidst walkout by the Opposition Congress,Punjab Assembly on Monday elected BJP MLA Chunni Lal Bhagat as the Deputy Speaker of Vidhan Sabha.

The name of Bhagat,who has been MLA twice,was proposed by Leader of the House and Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal and seconded by Cabinet minister Tikshan Sud.

Before the agenda of the election came up in the House,the entire Opposition Congress trooped out of the Assembly protesting the session was convened only for the purpose of electing the Deputy Speaker.

Describing Bhagat as an experienced man and social worker,Badal congratulated him for his election to the post.

The post of Deputy Speaker had fallen vacant last month after Satpal Gosain was elevated to the post of Cabinet minister.

The one-day special session was convened to elect the Deputy Speaker. After the election,the House was adjourned sine die.
