Centre to take up preservation of Kashmiri manuscripts

Sibal’s announcement came in response to proposals put forth by secretary of the Academy,Khalid Bashir Ahmad during his briefing about the ongoing and future projects of the literary body.

The secretary highlighted the need for digitisation and preservation of the Academy’s rich manuscript collection,setting up of a conservation lab,a translation wing to

transfer classics of different languages into the languages of the state and the vice versa.

A power point presentation was also made on the multi-crore ‘Tehzeeb Mahal’,being set up here as the hub of art,culture and literary activities.

Responding to the demand by Jnanpith awardee and noted Kashmiri poet,Rehman Rahi,for restarting the practice of having national news reels and documentaries dubbed in Kashmiri language,Sibal said he would take up the matter with

the concerned ministry.

An exhibition of rare manuscripts,paintings,calligraphy specimen and Academy’s publications was organised.

The minister evinced keen interest in the manuscripts and other displayed items which included a rare copy of Holy Quran calligraphed in 1237 AD by Fateh Ullah Kashmiri.

Another manuscript on display was written in 1594 AD and is the only copy of Holy Quran in the world to be written in saffron ink. Copies of Bhagwad Geeta and Mahabharata in Persian were also displayed.

Another attraction at the exhibition was a Persian manuscript written in calligraphy with nail of thumb,popularly known as ‘Khat-e-Nakhun’.

A marvel of calligraphy,the margin of the manuscript is decorated with illustrations of men,birds and animals.

The paintings put on display included some rare works of painters like M F Hussain,S N Bendre,Jatin Das and G RSantosh.

“The villagers have their last hope in the judicial system and appointed the petitioners to approach the court to seek the redressal of their genuine grievances,” the

petitioners had pleaded.

The residents alleged that the minister wants the school of another village to get upgraded.

Challenging the communication of the zonal education officer dated July 7,the petitioners said RMSA is a Centrally sponsored scheme and “the MLA is nobody to poke his nose in the affairs of the functioning of the Central government and

state education department”.

“Once the feasibility report is considered by the Central government and a separate code number is allotted to the middle school for purpose of upgradation,by no stretch of imagination the same can be amended or modified by the MLA as a gift to the school which do not qualify under the criteria fixed on this behalf,” they said.

The petitioners also sought the court’s help in restraining the minister from interfering and creating hurdles in the upgradation of the school.
