Cold wave intensifies in Kashmir

The Leh district recorded a minimum of minus 11.4 degree Celsius last night,a MeT official said.

Cold wave in Kashmir intensified as mercury in Leh town in the remote Ladakh region dipped to minus 11.4 degree Celsius while night temperature in the valley remained below freezing point.

In Kargil town of Ladakh region,mercury dipped to a minimum of minus 7.0 degree Celsius,he said.

Mercury in Leh district and its adjoining Kargil district has continued to hover several degrees below freezing point over the past fortnight.

In the summer capital of Jammu,the mercury dipped to minimum of minus 2.0 degree Celsius,a decrease of 0.8 degrees compared to yesterday,the official said.

He said the night temperature in the south Kashmir tourist resort of Pahalgam and in the north Kashmir skiing resort of Gulmarg dipped to the low of minus 4.2 degree Celsius.

The gateway township in south Kashmir,Qazigund,recorded a minimum of minus 2.4 degrees Celsius while as north Kashmir’s frontier Kupwara district recorded minus 1.7 degrees Celsius,he said.

The official said the weather is expected to remain dry for next 24 hours.
