Incomplete infrastructure projects and works have cost the Andhra Pradesh government a whopping Rs 27,235 crore till the end of March 2010,a Comptroller and Auditor General report has said. In its report on state's finances for the year ended March 2010,the CAG pointed out that 56 projects\works could not be completed in time resulting in a cost escalation of Rs 27,235 crore. "Non-completion of these projects within the stipulated period not only resulted in increase in the costs but also deprived the state of intended benefits for a long time," the report said. Of the 56 projects,34 were major irrigation projects taken up under the government's ambitious Jalayagnam Programme in 2004. While the original cost of these projects was Rs 41,847 crore, the revised cost shot up to a whopping Rs 63,506 crore because of the inordinate delay in execution. The cost overrun on these 34 projects itself amounted to Rs 27,140 crore,CAG said in its report. The state government had spent Rs 35,886.93 crore till March 2010 on 46 irrigation projects, including the 34 incomplete ones. Non-completion of 18 road projects resulted in a cost overrun of Rs 91.84 crore,it said.
