Jammu and Kashmir police on Sunday claimed to have recovered a truckload of illicit liquor in Kulgam district,which is scheduled to go for its first Panchayat polls later this month.
A special police team intercepted a truck at Qaimoh in Kulgam,75 kms from here,last night and recovered 3816 bottles of two brands of whisky from the vehicle,a police spokesman said.
Qaimoh block of Kulgam is scheduled to go for Panchayat polls on April 13. The panchayat elections are being held in the state after over a decade.
Terming the seizure of the liquor as a “major success” in its drive against narcotic smugglers,drug peddlers and bootleggers,the spokesman said the driver of the truck sped away on seeing police and after stopping the vehicle at a distance managed his escape under the cover of darkness.
On checking the vehicle,a big haul of illicit liquor was found stacked in the truck,he said.
During the scrutiny of documents,the spokesman said it was found that challan purported to contain 106 sacks of potatoes but during checking only 30 sacks were found in the vehicle.
