CPI(M) state secretary Pinarayi Vijayan,on Tuesday demanded a judicial probe into the police action against students belonging to the CPI(M) affiliate Students Federation of India, who were agitating against the alleged illegal admission of a student into the Kozhikode Government Engineering College.
Police had fired four rounds in the air on Monday as they said the protesters continued to pelt stones even after lathicharge and teargas. At least 20 people were injured during the protests on Monday against the alleged illegal admission of student Nirmal Madhavan to the college.
Inaugurating a picketing organised by the student wing of CPI(M),SFI and DYFI infront of the college,Vijayan said a police inquiry would not be able to bring to light the facts. Only a judicial probe will bring all the facts including the role of the UDF government in the police action, he said.
Vijayan demanded strong action against the Assistant Commissioner of Police Radhakrishna Pillai, who he alleged had fired four rounds on the students — and not in the air,as claimed by police — during the agitation.
Refuting the claim of the police that the police official had secured the order from an executive magistrate for firing,Vijayan alleged that police had not got the firing order from the Magistrate. They are pressing the executive magistrate for obtaining an order now.
Criticising the government,he said the incident showed the state government had given its consent to the police to use any means to suppress the agitation.
The protests would continue till Madhavan was removed from the college,he added. Vijayan also visited the injured student leaders at the Kozhikode Medical College hospital.
Meanwhile, the State Human Rights Commission asked the District Collector,P B Salim,to furnish a report on the police firing.
