Omar stresses need for preserving biodiversity

He says coordinated approach is required to strike a balance between development and environment protection.

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah today stressed the need for protecting and preserving the state’s rich biodiversity while moving forward on development front.

“There is a need to protect and preserve the state’s rich biodiversity…While moving forward on development front,the protection of environment,forests,wetlands,water bodies and wildlife should be underlined as a compulsory requirement,” he said while chairing a meeting of the State Board for Wildlife here.

The Chief Minister,who is also the board’s chairman,said a coordinated and holistic approach was required to strike a balance between development and environment

protection.

Omar said the conditions put by the forest and environment department while granting permissions for some necessary development works should be adhered to in letter and spirit.

The board members also discussed matters relating to the enhancement of ex-gratia compensation for loss of life,livestock and crop in case of wild animal-human conflict,and strengthening of wildlife protection department,among other issues.
