Rape,molestation on decline in Delhi: MHA

‘Wrong to say that Delhi is unsafe for women,and that crimes against them are increasing.’

The government on Wednesday said it is not correct to say that Delhi has become the most unsafe place for women and incidents of rape and molestation in the national capital have come down in the last five years.

“It is not correct to say that Delhi has become the most unsafe place for women,and crimes against women are increasing day by day,” Minister of State for Home Mullapally Ramachandran said in the Rajya Sabha in response to a question whether the national capital has been prone to crime against women.

“The incidents of rape and molestation of women reported in Delhi have shown a decline over the last five years,” Ramachandran said.

The highest number of 25,246 cases of crime against women were registered in Andhra Pradesh last year,followed by 22,587 in Uttar Pradesh,20,629 in West Bengal and 17,872 in Madhya Pradesh,according to data given by the minister.

He said 15,431 cases were registered in Rajasthan,14,060

in Maharashtra and 8,898 cases were filed in Karnataka.

While a total of 4,121 cases were registered in Delhi,states like Orissa (12),Nagaland (12) and Sikkim (32) had fewer instances of such crime.
