Security forces kill 3 Maoists in Chhattisgarh encounter

The encounter took place at around 8 am in southern Abujhmad, near a hill deep inside the forest ahead of Koylibeda village. Abujhmad is an unsurveyed area that is larger than the state of Goa, and has been a Maoist stronghold.

Security forces killed three Maoists during an operation in the Abujhmad area of Chhattisgarh’s Kanker district on Sunday morning.

The encounter took place at around 8 am in southern Abujhmad, near a hill deep inside the forest ahead of Koylibeda village. Abujhmad is an unsurveyed area that is larger than the state of Goa, and has been a Maoist stronghold.

A joint team of District Reserve Guards (DRG), Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) and Border Security Force (BSF) personnel ventured into the forest area after getting some intelligence inputs, officials said. Soon after, the encounter began.

During the encounter, three Maoists, all men, were shot dead, officials said. “We have recovered three indigenously made weapons from them. Efforts are on to ascertain their identity,” said Kanker district superintendent of police Kalyan Elesela.

A new police camp has recently come up around 15 kilometres from the encounter spot. Police sources said a number of police camps have been established recently in Kanker, and that anti-Naxal operations have been stepped up.
